If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, then chances are you have been prescribed a CPAP machine for treatment. Getting used to a CPAP machine is a struggle for many patients who use one; in fact, as many as 80% of CPAP users don't use it enough to keep them safe. Using a CPAP machine does not have to be hard, so follow these tips to help your CPAP machine help you.

1. Take small steps to get accustomed to your machine

Studies show that about half of all people who are prescribed CPAP machines stop using them in one to three weeks. Doing this will pose a huge hazard on your health, so one way to ensure you are using a CPAP machine properly is to take it slow in the beginning. Some ways include:

  • wearing your machine while you are watching television or cooking.
  • wearing your machine while you are in bed before you fall asleep.
  • wearing your machine every time you fall asleep, even naps. This will help you become accustomed to it at all times.

Remember that the less you wear your CPAP mask, the harder it will be to get accustomed to it.

2. Ensure it fits correctly

When using a CPAP machine, the last thing you want is to be in pain or discomfort. To combat this, work with your CPAP provider to ensure you have the correct fit. There are many types of mask types to choose from, including nasal masks and nasal pillows. Generally, 50% of patients prefer nasal pillows, 45% favor nasal masks, and the remaining five percent of users have no preference.

3. Use the ramp function to get used to the air flow

Typically, many patients have a difficult time adjusting to the air flow. One way to combat this is to use the ramp function on your machine, which allows you to start with low air pressure that gradually increases over time. Eventually the pressure will reach the level that your doctor prescribed, but it will come gradually, so as to not startle you while you are sleeping.
